J. Lee's 2007 Movie Reviews

This section contains my reviews of movies that I've seen in this calendar year. These are movies that I've seen for the first time this year, not necessarily movies that came out in this year. These are listed in chronological order of viewing. Inset text in blue are the Academy Awards (winners and nominees) for the movie. Be sure to read my movie review disclaimer info.

Here are some other movies I've seen this year: [none so far]

World Trade Center
Grade: D
Viewed on DVD.

I just don't think it was very good. The filmmaker just can't give a broad enough picture of how huge 9/11 was when they focus on two characters. 9/11 can't and shouldn't be about just a couple of people.

Jackass Number Two
Grade: B-
Viewed on DVD.

Not as good as the first, but still worth a rental.

11:14
Grade: A-
Viewed on DVD.

A real sleeper. A first time director with well known names? How does this happen? Solid.

Upcoming movies I'm planning to see:

The following list is approximately in order of original USA theatrical release. I make an attempt to not list films which have come to the theatres and gone, with the exception of the "Queued up on TiVo" and "On the lookout for" sections, which are movies I intend to see soon, but are no longer in the theatres. The theatrical release date is given in purple. Text in green is the movie premise, usually stolen from
upcomingmovies.com or the IMDB.

  19. Vertical Ray of the Sun 2000
  20. Bruce Almighty 2003
  21. Intolerable Cruelty 2003
  22. The Day After Tomorrow 2004
  23. Christmas with the Kranks 2004 Unlike John Grisham's non-lawyer book (which was also made into a movie), this book was quite good. It should make a hilarious (even if sappy) movie. Update:Why did we need to change the title? Weak sauce.
  24. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 9 December 2005 C. S. Lewis. Interesting. Update: I saw a trailer of this while watching Sith. It looks interesting. I read this book (but not the entire series) once many moons ago. I'll probably need to re-read before seeing this.
  25. The Sentinal 21 April 2006 CIA.
  26. The Da Vinci Code 19 May 2006 Hanks as Langdon. Tautou as Neveu.
  27. Cars 9 June 2006 Pixar.

Coming Soon To A Theatre Near You

  28. Children of Men 29 September 2006
  29. The Fountain 13 October 2006
  30. Jurassic Park IV 2006 The first one was spectacular. The next two were debacles, pure and simple. Stay away, yo.
  31. The Italian Job II 2006
  32. Fletch Won 2006 Jason Lee as Fletch? With Kevin Smith directing? Sign me up!!!
  33. Mimzy 4 April 2007
  34. Grind House 6 April 2007
  35. Indiana Jones 4 23 May 2007 Harrison Ford is back as Indy.
  36. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix June 2007
  37. Ender's Game 2008
  38. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince 2008?
  39. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2009 This is the last one. J. K. Rowling has apparently already written the final paragraph of Harry Potter VII, and the last word is scar.

  40. Rendezvous with Rama Unknown I'm VERY worried about this. Rendezvous with Rama is my favorite Arthur C. Clarke novel, and Clarke is my favorite author. Obviously, I will be very unpleased with any director license that changes the story in any way. David Fincher is directing the movie, which gives me yet another reason to worry. The good news is that Morgan Freeman is starring as Commander William T. Norton, which is a solid fit, in my opinion. Clearly, I'm excited about the prospect of another Clarke novel making it to the big screen, but this particular novel could easily end up being transformed into a lousy movie, especially with a total clown like Fincher directing. Fincher is best known for, among other things, directing horrific films like Alien 3. To be perfectly fair, he also had a gem in Se7en. Update: From Entertainment Weekly (9/8/00, p. 52): SPACE CASE Speaking of David Fincher, he may be heading into sci-fi land himself. More than four years ago, Morgan Freeman's production company, Revelations Entertainment, optioned Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous With Rama, about a spacecraft's occupants, and attached Fincher. Now the project is in active development, with a script by former sci-fi writer Scott Brick. "It's not an easy project, but it's possible now because of computer technology," says Freeman, who will star and produce. The film, which has not yet been shooped to studios, requires 18 months of preproduction, two months of filming, and a year of post. At least in space, no one can hear you scream... from exhaustion. Update: The official website (http://www.rendezvouswithrama.com/) states that the movie is due to be released in 2004. They better hurry. Old Man Clarke isn't going to be around too much longer. Update: Here's some info from David Fincher's web site.
